"Well, well, well. Looks like we've got a couple of snoops." The white bat said.
The green furred male nodded, "What should we do with them?" He asked turning towards the black one.
Even though Shadow was the youngest, besides Smoke, he had already earned respect from the older children, and was viewed as the leader.
He slowly walked over to the prince and princess.
Shadow put his hand around Silver's cheeks and drew his head up.
A whimper escaped Silver and he cried silently.
"Leave him alone!" Blaze shouted angrily.
At once, the black male let go of Silver and went to Blaze, "Why were you following us?" He growled, ruby eyes staring into gold.
Blaze felt uneasy, "We were just exploring. I did not know you were."
He said nothing.
"Will you please let us go?"
"Why? So you can tell your parents where we are?"
"No. But if we did they could help you." She said as she noticed how each of his ribs were seen through his fur.
"Help me?" He scoffed, "Don't you know anything princess? Your own mother was the on who screamed kill 'it.'" He said spitefully.
"Whatever princess. If your parents came to "help" they might help Scourge, Rouge and Smoke. But me and Meph, they'd kill us."
She looked up at the navy hedgehog, who nodded.
She sighed, "We won't tell anyone."
Shadow nodded, "Good."
Mephiles pushed them on the ground.
Blaze growled at them angrily.
Silver trembled with fear.
"Get out of here." Shadow said folding his arms across his chest.
Blaze helped Silver up and they hurried off.
Later on, the orphans were down by the brook. Mephiles was washing off his claws and fur. Smoke sat beside him watching, "Why are you doing that?" He asked after a while.
"I like to be clean." He answered as he rubbed the water into his fur.
"Because I like to."
"Did your mama keep you really clean when you were little?"
Mephiles stopped abruptly, "Keep your nose out of my business." He said standing up.
"Meph." Rouge said putting her hand on his shoulder.
He shrugged her away, "Just leave me alone." He walked away from the clearing.
Shadow's red eyes followed him as he went by. He knew Mephiles' childhood had been bad, but Meph didn't like to talk about it so no one really knew what had happened.
Scourge shook his head, "Meph needs to lighten up."
"Come on Scourge," Rouge said crossing her legs, sitting beside Shadow on the rock, "Give the guy a break. He's had a rough life."
